            The 10th PrintoCent InnoFest was held on September 12-13, 2024 at the beautiful Nallikari beach restaurant in Oulu. PrintoCent InnoFest is an innovation competition — it’s a place where ideas, problems and Printed Intelligence solutions meet. It’s a place to learn how Printed Intelligence can solve on-going and future issues and create sustainable solutions. InnoFest is an open innovation event for anyone interested in Printed Intelligence. It has been a launching arena for several new companies and innovations within companies during the years.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

            PrintoCent InnoFest event hosted slightly over 100 participants equally from industry and academia. The event had again an international spread; this time six nationalities were present. Happily, also the age-spread was good; we got some true youngsters to join and also some retired “old-foxes”.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            The main themes this time were: Wearable and diagnostics, energy solutions, PI as a game-changer. Under these themes, sixteen innovation ideas had been selected through a pre-evaluation process. Some of the idea owners had built a team on their own, and some of the idea owners came by themselves. However, all ideation teams were boosted with additional experts, at least of Printed Intelligence know-how but also with designers, technology and business experts. Altogether these 60 experts from business and research did an amazing job in integrating to their teams immediately. Competition could begin!
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            In addition to very concentrated yet enthusiastic innovation, the participants could visit company booths of The Warming Surfaces Company, Elcoflex, Screentec, Tactotek and Delta Modtech, and learn about their products and processes within the Printed Intelligence industry. Also, the EU funded projects Infinite and Reboot were introduced and opportunities in these presented. Speeches were given by last years’ InnoFest winning team “Hidden power” by Antti Backman and financing advise was given by Investor Ville Heikkinen from Butterfly.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            All teams made an incredible improvement on the innovation idea development, both technical and business wise, from the 3 min pitch on the first day to the 1 min pitch on the second day. And as always, the jury faced a challenging task in selecting the finalists and winners. The jury included Serial entrepreneur Markku Känsäkoski from MK Fluidics and Smart PD solutions, Creative technologist Ashley Colley from University of Lapland, Business and industry expert Christian Sundell from UC Management and Printed Intelligence expert Raimo Korhonen from Iscent.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The grand winner of PrintoCent InnoFest 2024 is team Pranava! Pranava innovation analysis metabolism from breathing cycles enabling dietary guidance and healthier life. Wildest idea price was received by team Bio Lidar and Attitude prize was given to Horse-AI.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            The 1st prize winner team was awarded with an ”InnoBoost” -prize. This means they will get  1) Visibility boost at PrintoCent Industry Cluster meeting or/and the PRINSE26 seminar, 2) Consultation on the idea development, and 3) First stage material functionality and capability testing at the PrinLab at Oulu University of Applied Sciences.

      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

            “Thank you to the City of Oulu and BusinessOulu for selecting us as the award recipient. I was surprised when I heard that Aikolon would have the honor of receiving the Export Company of the Year award. At the same time, I felt proud that in 2019, we dared to take a bold step and invest 10 million euros in a new production facility, which represents unique technology on a global scale. The production facility in Oulu manufactures high-quality and clear Aikon products, which are variously processed polycarbonate and acrylic sheets.”

           Legal Change and Adoption of New Technology
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The construction of the production facility was preceded by a legislative change that required, among other things, that the work-facing windows of forestry machine cabins be so-called bulletproof for safety reasons. This is because fragments from a broken saw chain must not penetrate the cabin windows. This requirement led to a new manufacturing technique involving the lamination of layers of lightweight and extremely impact-resistant polycarbonate plastic. Since polycarbonate scratches easily, the laminated products required a hard coating. A coating line was needed, costing 10 million euros, which also included an automatic screen-printing line, as well as lamination and thermoforming capacity. The decision to invest in a new production facility has proven to be the right one despite the challenging global situation, as demand is growing exponentially.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           Printed intelligence is laminated onto products
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Aikolon´s production line is highly complex, using coating chemicals, screen printing inks, and adhesive films. The material is baked, modified, and painted, and all these chemicals must work seamlessly together. Additionally, various smart technologies, such as transparent dashboards and electronic dimming films, can be laminated onto the lightweight, durable, and clear Aikon products. Aikolon is now making great strides towards a new era of technology. Previously, they were a company processing so-called "dumb" plastics, but today they are adding intelligence and new features to plastics in many different ways.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Growth in International Sales and Marketing
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Aikolon has been building sales and marketing for international markets for two years, focusing particularly on Italy. The Nordic countries, Turkey, and Central Europe have also been key target markets. Despite limited resources they have introduced the Aikon® brand in desired markets and found several customers interested in technology and products. Aikon® products have gained a lot of international attention and interest in a short time, even as far as Japan.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Future Goals
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Aikolon has risen in two years to the level of its German competitor, which has been making laminated and coated plastic glasses for 40 years. However, they will keep a cool head and carefully consider which projects are worth pursuing. The direction is clear. For a small Finnish family business, a realistic goal is to grow into a company with a turnover of approximately 50 million euros in ten years.

            PrintoCent members presented a joint technology demo at LOPE-C in Münich this year 25.-27.2.2024. How did Italian photovoltaic manufacturer Ribes Tech and Finnish, Oulu-based printed electronics contract manufacturer Elcoflex end-up doing an application demo and what is the result? We interviewed Dr. Francesca Scuratti, responsible for Product Development at Ribes Tech and Janne Niva, Head of Operations at Elcoflex.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Francesca explains how it all started. “When we came to know of each other’s activities through Printocent meetings we immediately knew that we had synergies that could be explored and developed. On Ribes Tech’s side, we recognized the high added value that can be provided to the PV (photovoltaic) if an energy storage realized through similar processes is combined with it, opening up to a plethora of new applications that would be hard or impossible to target with the PV alone.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The demo combines printed supercapacitors (SCs)-realized by Elcoflex- and organic photovoltaic (OPV) modules - realized by Ribes Tech. The OPV modules provide power to the SCs without the need of an external power source while the SCs store energy harvested by the OPV from light (outdoor or indoor). The functioning of the system is demonstrated by providing power to a LED, showing the possibility to power battery-free wireless systems that can effortlessly sustain high current density operations.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           What are the aimed applications areas for this technology?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            PV-powered SCs can find use in all applications in which the use of batteries is not feasible because of their cumbersome form factor or because it would not be possible to guarantee their replacement and maintenance: for instance in active flexible RFID tags and data loggers, in distributed IoT nodes, smart wearable sensors, etc.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           How was this demo done?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Both the OPV and the SC components are printed on plastic substrates and are realized using additive manufacturing roll-to-roll compatible techniques, suitable for high-volume production on flexible substrates. This demo was done combining the elements realized independently on two different substrates. However, the production processes are compatible and we are already discussing how to integrate these components on the same flexible substrate.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            For this demo we aimed at realizing a system suitable to power standard electronics at 3V. Elcoflex studied a 3 element SC, powering a LED. Ribes Tech provided a PV panel able to generate the target voltage and supplying enough current in indoor light to charge the SC in short time and keep the supercapacitors charged to sustain periodic activations of the LED.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Any challenges or positive learnings?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Elcoflex had already developed a demo of battery-powered SCs, which needed some electronic components to handle the charge of the SCs. When we started discussing we did not know how to integrate the two printed devices without using additional standard electronic components, such as diodes, to interface them. During the development of the PV-powered SC demo we were actually surprised to see that due to the peculiar electrical characteristics of the PV we could actually simplify the electronic design of the finished demo – which is great news and very promising for future industrialization of the system.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           And finally, what next?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            We are currently testing the possibility to laminate the PV and SC on the same substrate; future endeavors will focus on assessing the feasibility of a joint production process. Final goal is to provide a unique device capable to integrate both energy harvesting and storing in a single printed assembly.

            This demo is a brilliant example of fruitful collaboration as a result of the PrintoCent cluster activities! Congratulations to both companies!

            Participants of the PRINSE'24 seminar 24.-25 Jan in Oulu, Finland, were treated to a week of insightful company visits, engaging seminar sessions, and collaborative networking moments. The international seminar once again lived up to its reputation, offering a diverse range of activities, an open and friendly atmosphere to get plentiful of new contacts, and learnings on the technological possibilities and the industry status.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            PRINSE'24 gathered in total 210 participants from nearly 20 countries - around 80 companies with 140 industrial participants. The participants especially appreciated the excellent program with insightful speakers, the great networking, not to mention smooth and timely organization of all the events throughout the week.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “Printed Intelligence is making great impact already” was the key theme in this 8

            PRINSE. We heard many real-life business stories how printed intelligence is creating impact; some very concrete environmental and social sustainability actions and achievements were shared. Printed intelligence was proven to have a lot of opportunities in healthcare and mobility, and emerging as an important enabler in sectors like construction and energy sectors.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The seminar featured excellent keynote speakers who shared their expertise and insights on various industry topics. Alain Schumacher from IEE told us how printed intelligence allowed them to respond to industry needs in the industrial and medical markets early on in 1989, and how they could expand the business to sensors in the automotive sector by continuously carefully investigating the customer needs. “The move to a model of circular economy opens a spectrum for novel use cases right in the sweet spot of the printed electronics world. Following the visionary objective “green by design”, the printed electronics domain has, by its nature, significant potential to be an important player in terms of sustainable materials, production processes and devices.” Ville Vartiovaara from GE Health spread light on the various demands in different parts of the healthcare sector giving realistic opportunities for different sizes and types of companies. Jani-Mikael Kuusisto with his long career with several Printed Intelligence companies and currently acting as CEO at The Warming Surfaces Company – start-up going to the construction sector, emphasized the importance of networks and support of communities like the PrintoCent.

&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div&gt;&#xD;

            At PRINSE, the industry speaks! The presentations from a very wide spread of companies in different sectors added a practical dimension to the seminar, allowing businesses to showcase their products and services. The presentations facilitated meaningful interactions between industry professionals, fostering potential collaborations and partnerships during the breaks. Companies also showed examples of their products at the company booths, which gave another great setting to discuss collaboration possibilities. Attendees had the opportunity to learn from thought leaders and gain valuable perspectives on the latest trends and innovations.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            The last session of the two seminar days left no one cold! Seppo Yrjölä from Nokia gave an excellent and well-appreciated vision plenary on historical grounds of several technology evolvements in the past, thus really picking our brains to think what’s ahead of us in the future. Business angle Ali Omar reminded the tech audience of making sure to know who is the customer paying in order to solve the right problems with the right solutions and getting funding on the way to do it! Last but not least, Sasha Pass from Playtronica connected us with a technology-music interplay as a bridge to Oulu being the European Culture Capital in 2026 (which is the year of next PRINSE!).

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           Beyond the informative sessions, the social aspect of the seminar was equally rewarding. The city of Oulu hosted a delightful cocktail reception, providing participants with a relaxed environment to connect and exchange ideas. The seminar concluded its Thursday program with a unique experience—a sauna and jacuzzi session amidst the winter landscape of Nallikari “frozen beach”. This informal gathering allowed attendees to unwind, network, and build lasting connections in a picturesque setting.

            The PRINSE'24 seminar once again proved to be a comprehensive and enriching event, highlighting the strength of international collaboration within the industry. Participants left with not only enhanced knowledge but also new contacts and a sense of camaraderie, making this year's seminar a memorable and valuable experience for all involved.            The 9th PrintoCent InnoFest was held in a summery warm Oulu on June 8.-9.2023. The event gathered 120 people from 6 different countries, half of the participants were from companies representing 30 companies in total. We had 17 superb innovation teams boosted with 60 experts from business and research. We saw once again remarkable innovation development during the 2 days!
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The jury had a very difficult task in choosing the finalists and the winners – three prizes were awarded. The grand winner of PrintoCent InnoFest 2023 was team Hidden power! This Innovation utilizes the shielded flat cables from the New Cable Corporation to redesign, rethink and renew the whole construction industry. Team Urisens with an intelligent continence aid was awarded with The Attitude prize. Wildest idea prize was received by the PhanTeam with their biotissue-mimicking “skin” for robots! Congratulations to all winners! 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

            The far-most innovator this time came from India, Professor TKS Priya Lakshmi and she wrote a very nice report on her experience at InnoFest in

            “The father of PrintoCent”, Ilkka Kaisto, is retiring.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;

&lt;div&gt;&#xD;

            Ilkka started building the PrintoCent community and its operations in 2011. His prior background in different companies, as an entrepreneur as well as in technology scouting and R&amp;amp;D, laid an excellent base for taking charge of forming and running a successful cluster for the commercialization of Printed Intelligence. PrintoCent — a bridge between R&amp;amp;D and companies! Fair to say, it has maybe not been just one bridge but several - many paths, many ways, many value chains.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           We asked Ilkka, what he thinks has been most rewarding for him in his PrintoCent time:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            “Travelling with the youngsters and seeing their passion and enthusiasm grow - being able to pass on experiences of the importance of networking and connecting face-to-face with people. Getting research and development people out of their comfort zone to talk with business people and vice versa, creating new concepts, founding companies and seeing it work! Establishing the Printocent Innofest event for the first time and seeing the concept work better and better year-after-year has been very rewarding – from an idea to innovation to business”. 
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;

            How about what remains unfinished or did not (yet) happen as you hoped?
           &#xD;

            “Based on my experiences in shipbuilding and public information systems I knew that the adoption of new technologies by industries is slow and missionary patience is needed to get remarkable disruption to take place. At first ten years in research to show the potential, then next ten years in startups to break through in some application areas and then another ten years to make the technology standardized and accepted. In parallel not to forget the training and education of experienced and new brains in the field.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            So, long term funding commitments of public funding, startup investors and big companies are needed for research and startups as well as for whole R&amp;amp;D and Manufacturing value chain development. I trust that the clear benefits – light in weight, space and material savings, flexible and stretchable substrates, 3d-forming towards structural electronics integration – will soon pave the way for a wide range of application areas.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Due to heavy disruptions in value chains I believe that the courageous big companies utilize the brilliant know-how created in PrintoCent community and will invest in Finland and Europe to secure the Printed Intelligence industrialization and new way product creation for the benefit of European communities.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

            What are your plans for the future, Ilkka?

            “I will not disappear from the Printed Intelligence field as  I will continue working through Testi Technologies, and hopefully seeing you in PRINSE, PrintoCent Innofest and cluster meetings. However, I will be dedicating more time to other “hobbies” – as indicated by the picture.

      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

      <title>Expansion of Printocent Pilot Factory to accelerate the development of medical devices</title>

           VTT announced in January 2023 a new 3.4 M€ investment to develop the research environment and manufacturing capabilities of Printocent pilot factory in Oulu. This enables the development of new innovative photonics-based medical devices and prototype manufacturing in a regulated manufacturing environment.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           More versatile, flexible and continuous monitoring of people’s condition with improved user comfort can be obtained thanks to photonics-based technology breakthroughs. The increased amount of data will enable more personalised care and better resource-efficiency in healthcare system. This supports the renewal of conventionally reactive healthcare towards more proactive and resource-efficient direction.
            &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           The new research facility is particularly suitable for the development of photonics-based sensor solutions, such as smart patches, rapid diagnostics cartridges and their optical readers. The investment provides an opportunity for companies to develop new concepts in a pilot-scale fabrication environment that is compatible with the medical device compliant industrial production. The new environment will help to reduce the research and development costs of companies and to accelerate the commercialisation of photonics-based medical devices and diagnostic products.
          &#xD;

New investors to Canatu also included Minth Group Ltd., Nordea, and Varma. With this latest funding round, Canatu has raised a total of 74M€ in financing since 2008.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           “With the new funding round, we’ll be able to accelerate the company’s growth in the semiconductor and automotive markets and expand automated manufacturing lines in Finland. It will also enable us to develop new business domains based on the most advanced carbon nanotube technology. This round of funding shows the confidence of our existing and new investors have in Canatu and ensures the company will continue its rapid growth.            PrintoCent Innofest 2022 was held for the 8th time already in the beginning of September at the Oulu beach site, Nallikari.

           Once again we witnessed great innovativeness, great team work and fair (not fierce) competition! Innofest is a serious, yet such a fun event and the biggest innovation competition around Printed Intelligence. We saw some great mixing and matching of people and ideas from different industries, cultures and origins, from academia to business. We had altogether 110 people from more than 10 countries in the event.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Altogether 16 superb teams worked for 2 days on their idea. Some of the ideas came from existing or “to-be-established” companies, some from academia and some from individual innovators or organizations. All teams were boosted with experts from business and research – including expertise on the idea topic, design, financing and technology. Once again we saw remarkable innovation development happening during the 2 days! The pitches show such improvement and cristallization of the idea and the business potential from the day-one 3-minute pitch, to next morning’s 1-minute pitch! After the 1-minute pitch, the jury chooses the top 5 ideas for the final round of 3-minute pitches. And then the honourable jury announces the winners. The jury included Harri Hyväri (EH Konsultointi), Jani-Mikael Kuusisto (Ynvisible), Markku Känsäkoski (University of Oulu) and Timo Peltoniemi (Elcoflex). The winners are:

            Lab on Chip for Spectroscopy
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            -idea which is a solution for early stage disease detection, e.g for diabetes.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
          
             Jury’s special acknowledgement was given to
            &#xD;
        &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Oulu 2026
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           Last year’s InnoFest winning team, Warming Surfaces, aims to reduce heating energy consumption in buildings by embedding smart heaters into interior surfaces (e.g. floor laminates) and furnishings, and making the control of warming as easy and nearly as fast as controlling lighting. The proposed solution allows the reduction of base heating in buildings by 5-10 celsius, and the digital warming surfaces provide warmth to the inhabitants when and where they need it, and at temperature levels adapted to individual preferences.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The team has nurtured the concept within VTT LaunchPad incubator program, and has now two patents granted and a proven industrial scale manufacturing process. First product prototypes have been produced with industrial partners. The Warming Surfaces Company is set to begin operations this autumn with seed stage financing from business angels and family funds. A first product launch is planned for spring 2023.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ﻿
           &#xD;

           The market need for warming surfaces is immediate. At InnoFest’21 the team was responding to European Commission’s sustainability targets and need for 30 million buildings to be renovated for their heating by 2030. During the past year energy prices have shot up and the need for energy conservation and reducing reliance on fossil fuels has become even more pressing. As space heating accounts for more than 60% of energy consumption in buildings (over 80% in Finland), governments are advising that this winter temperatures in buildings are reduced. The Warming Surfaces Company looks to offer the solution that allows to do just that while at the same time increasing the comfort of living.
          &#xD;

           PRINSE‘22 PrintoCent Industry Seminar was held 8.-9. June in Oulu, Finland for the 7th time already. PRINSE’22 gathered in total 220 participants from 23 countries – over 100 companies with 155 industrial participants!
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Once again the PRINSE magic happend – new technologies introduced, new business opportunities found, new contacts made! All this in an relaxed yet active, friendly and cozy atmopshere. 100% of the participants who replied to the feed-back questionnaire thought it was time well-spent! Thank you all who participated and made this happen.
