February 17, 2016: Oulu, Finland — The second PrintoCent Design Competition attracted high quality entries and last week the competition finalists gave presentations to the media, jury and industry audiences at the Design Competition Exhibition and Awards session during Polar Bear Pithing networking event in Oulu.
This year the jury selected winners in two categories: Category I – Printed light source for rough conditions and Category II – Farmhouse lighting. The finalists were selected among dozens of excellent design ideas from several countries and in the second round the finalists processed their ideas further as a working prototypes with more detailed presentations. As a result, the jury awarded the 2016 finalists in the following order:
Category I – Printed light source for rough conditions
Grand Winner – Petri Montin with the design called MALLA
Best Business Potential – Petri Montin with the design called MALLA
Wildest Idea – Veli Kouri with the design called CANOPUS
Gaterogy II – Farmhouse light
Grand Winner – Iida Kalliokoski Silvestre with the design called Magnetic LED
Best Business Potential – Petri Montin with the design called MNML
Wildest Idea – Brigitte Lanz with the design called Skylight
The competition was sponsored by the leading farm insurance company LocalTapiola and their jury representative Business Director, Mr. Ilkka Herva stated that the Farmhouse light winner i.e. Magnetic Led brilliantly took into account the existing lighting infrastructure with the opportunity for cost efficient technology upgrade. As preemptive safety measures are growingly important, there’s a notable market for safer lighting solutions while the modern farms are rapidly renewing their lighting solutions.
All in all, the jury was faced with a challenging yet a delightful task, as the quality of the design works was exceptional. The winning works were a good match to the original brief and showed wonderful open mindedness to the given task. Another honorable member of the jury, Mr. Mario Aguilera, the CEO of Tespack stated being very surprised with the overall quality of the designs and the potential for business commercialization the competitors showed in their designs. Also the Director of PrintoCent, Mr. Ilkka Kaisto was most pleased with the competition as the design works now positively challenge PrintoCent to come up with actual business cases with these already functioning prototypes.
